Music Guessing Game

These still occasionally make the rounds on Facebook, and I follow along when they do. I'm in the midst of writing a long deep blog for Friday (or maybe Monday... ya know, pretty much whenever I get around to it) so you get another light fluffy game today.

There are 50 lyrics to guess, but, um, several might be kind of impossible. I lost track of how many times I put in a lyric and thought, "Well, NOBODY is going to guess that." So you should all prove me wrong and guess ALL OF THEM before I post the answers next week.

Step 1: Put your music player on shuffle.

Step 2: Post the first line from the first 50 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing. (I'm actually only using my "Yes, I actually know these songs" playlist because I still have a bunch of songs on my iPod I don't really know and if I post the first line from any of those *I* won't know the answer.)

Step 3: Take the songs off the list when someone guesses both artist and track correctly. (Well, I'm going to just mark them as guessed. I want them to still be available for others to guess.)

Step 4: For those who are guessing -- looking the lyrics up on a search engine is CHEATING!

Step 5: If you like the game post your own. (Whatever. You can like it without having to post anything. That's dumb.)

Also, I have a lot of covers. I will give you points if you can guess the song and the original artist, but bonus points if you can guess the cover version for the ones marked with a star.

30 comments:

  1. Wow. I recognise exactly one of those and it's a TV show theme tune. (#32)

I was kinda curious what I'd get for my own collection, so here's a smaller sample of 20. I don't expect people to guess these, though feel free to try if you get bored of Hannah's.

    1. On my heart, the nights are drawing in.
    2. Once upon a lifetime, the spirits of the dark came to kill the beauty of our world.
    3. (instrumental)
    4. Close to insanity, beyond the realms I've been, at darkest places I'm crying "the dragon flies!"

    8. Kind of hard, hard to see, when you crawl, on your hands and knees

    10. Red sun rising, somewhere through the dense fog.

    12. You know you're not a strong man, and you're just about to cry.
    13. Mother wept for her son, she wept and sang, anxiously pondered fate, his and her own.
    14. Look into her eyes, do you see what I mean?
    15. It's alright, no need to question. Taste the night, just close your eyes, it just takes one bite.

    Thoughts:
    a) Many of these were written by non-native speakers and it shows.
    b) Some of these are not English. One is not any language.
    c) I WILL BE VERY IMPRESSED IF ANYONE GUESSES THE INSTRUMENTALS.

    1. Well, don't feel bad, because I don't know any of yours. Oh, except for #9. I sing that one all the time.

You know at least the *songs* for #17 and #38, right? Even if you don't know the artists?

      Delete
    2. I know the song for #38, but not #17. I Googled it and I'm pretty sure I've never even heard it.

      Delete
    3. Whoa. Heh. It's absolutely a holiday music staple here. It's the song that power belting singers do on their Christmas albums when they want to show how awesomely they can hit high notes.

      Delete
  2. I don't know most of these... but I absolutely love the fact that the "I Love My Lips" song is on here. xD

    1. Oh, I listen to a little bit of everything. And I have more VeggieTales on my iTunes that most people guess. Or... well, no. Probably just about as much as most people guess.

  3. 16. Slipped Away
    22. Unworthy of Your Love
    25. Piddle Twiddle and Resolve
    32. Big Bang Theory Theme Song
    37. I *think* this is 'I just can't wait to be King

And I have no idea what 48 is, but just the mental images it's drawing in my head are really funny.

    1. Correct on all your guesses (and I'm like 90% sure you know the musical for #29, although it's not one of the more well-known songs). Also, if you don't know #48, you are missing out on a large part of my childhood.

    2. Oooh, now I'm in love with this song.

Also, knowing that song is from VeggieTales it suddenly makes a lot more sense.

    3. Yes. Although I do have quite a lot of other songs that have similarly bizarre lyrics. (One of my favorites from last year was a little web cartoon song whose opening line was, "I'm a farmer, watch me do a jump off this ramp I just made out of cows.")

    1. Nice job! #30 and #44 are indeed covered by Glee, but #26 is not. But I'm not requiring people to guess the cover artists as long as they know the song, so you get credit for all of these. :) So glad somebody guessed the Adam Lambert song!

  5. 19 is Raised In Harlem from Hero! The Rock Opera!

    ReplyDelete
  6. 31 is Natural Woman. I'm sure it's a cover you own, but I'm not sure by whom. Maybe Sam? This is Sarah, the girl that sleeps on the couch, btw. I guessed 19 too.

    1. As hilarious as it would be to have Sam Tsui singing that he feels like a natural woman, it's not him. But I'll give you points for guessing the song anyway. I'm glad you identified yourself, although I'm pretty sure you're the only other one who would ever have known Raised in Harlem.

  7. 36 is If You Ever Come Back! Not sure that you have the original by The Script, you probably have the Cameron and Damion cover though. Sarah again.

    1. It is the original, actually. I'm pretty sure I stole the Cameron and Damian cover from you, so I have it as well, but The Script was what played.

  8. 40 is Rainbow Connection from The Muppet Movie. Though this is probably the Me First and the Gimee Gimee version. Sarah is ON FIRE!

  10. Our family's responses

Bekah: #3 is Who Am I by Point of Grace
Micah: #5 makes no sense and isn't even true
Bekah and me: #9 is from 25th annual putnam county spelling bee. Is it "I'm not that smart?" We don't think so, but it's worth guessing. We'd guess something else, but we're not that smart.
Bekah and Kate: #10 is from Pete's Dragon, Money, Money, Money
Bekah and Joel: #14, from Snoopy The Musical, Don't Be Anything Less Than Everything You Can Be
Me: #17 is O Holy Night, covered by, Oh, I don't know, maybe the Oi Holy Night guy?
Bekah: #21 from A Goofy Movie, On The Open Road
me: #22 -- it's been guessed, so I won't guess, but I think it goes really well with #15! Bekah guessed it though.
me: #38, Little Drummer Boy, covered by who knows, maybe Bowling for Soup?
me: #40 was already guessed, but it makes me happy/melancholy just to think of the song :-)
    Bekah and me: #42 Superchicken!!!
me: #46 If I had a hammer. Peter, Paul and Mary?
me: #48 lol ( = lips on leave, says Bekah)

    1. Micah is correct about #5. Heh. I clearly don't keep that song around for the great lyrics.

#9 is not "I'm Not That Smart." But if you decided to guess a random song title for the show, you could possibly guess the real one.

#17 not Oi Holy Night guy, but I'll count the song. Heh.
(Ditto for #38 - not Bowling For Soup.)

#22 and #15 are sung with extremely different purposes, heh, so pairing them together makes me laugh quite a lot.

#42 - I figured ONLY you guys would ever get that one. Hehe.

#46 - Yup. Peter, Paul and Mary.

  11. Hannah, here are mine after eliminating the 16 pure instrumentals. A couple of others were instrumental covers of songs with words, and I added the lyrics for those, which is sort of cheating perhaps, but I did it anyway.

A lot of them are really obvious.

    1. I feel the earth move under my feet
    2. Stayed in bed all morning just to pass the time
    3. The preparations for your party are parading below me

    9. My Baby don't mess around me 'cause she loves me so
    10. Now when the saints go marchin' in, when the saints go marchin' in
    11. Let every good fellow now join in a song
    12. Leise flehen meine Lieder Durch die Nacht zu dir
    13. Wouldn't want to be anybody else, hey
    14. Somewhere, over the rainbow, way up high, there's a land that I heard of once in a lullaby
    15. As my life goes on I believe somehow, something's changed
    16. Take my hand tonight, We can run so far
    17. Oh the sun is surely sinking down, but the moon is slowly rising
    18. You may not be an angel, 'cause angels are so few
    19. Do me wrong, do me right, tell me lies but hold me tight
    20. I love the summertime, lakes, woods and streams
    21. Lo, how a rose e'er blooming from tender stem hath sprung
    22. Make 'em laugh, make 'em laugh, don't you know everyone wants to laugh
    23. I can't give you anything but love, baby
    24. Now and then I think of when we were together

    27. Hey boys and girls, I want you to listen to me, I want to tell you a story you can hardly believe
    28. Just take some loneliness, and add a tear or two, throw in some emptiness, mix til you're bluer than blue

    1. Yay! I like when I get to guess these.

      1. I Feel the Earth Move, but I don't know by whom. I don't think I even know who sings it.
      3. Uninvited! From Sleeping Beauty Wakes.
      4. Walk On By, which I'm pretty sure is a Bacharach tune, but I don't know what version you have.
      5. I'm going to hazard a guess that it's called "My Soul Is A-Weary," but I don't actually know it.
      6. Copacabana!
      7. Um... that song. *sings along to remember it* Da da da da... How Great is Our God?
      9. I really thought I knew this, but then I realized I was just singing it to the tune of the verse of "Let's Hear It For the Boy."
      10. ...When the Saints Go Marching In?
      14. Some version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Jane Monheit?

And then there are a whole bunch I don't know.

      21. Obviously Lo How a Rose E'er Blooming, but I don't know who you have singing it.
      22. Make 'Em Laugh. Original version, I'd hope.
      23. I Can't Give You Anything But Love, but I don't know who. All these jazz standards are difficult to guess!
      24. I totally know this one, but I can't think of what it is.
      25. ...Is this Harry Belafonte? I have a vague feeling that I don't know it but can't place it.
      29. Silent Night. By... someone.
      30. Good Night My Someone from The Music Man.
      33. I totally know this one too. But I can't remember it.
      34. Well, this is Take a Bow. Is it by Kevin Max? I think that might have been the only original song on that album. Where did this come from? Haha... I can't imagine Elizabeth would have had it, but maybe she did.

    2. Take a Bow is by Muse originally. One I actually recognised!

(To be fair, I do know Somewhere Over the Rainbow and Silent Night as well.)

    3. Let's see:
      1. Correct, and not by the original singer (whose version I also own and who, oddly enough, also sang song #2)
      3. Correct
      4. Correct, and it is written by Bacharach
      5. Nope
      6. Correct, by Barry Manilow of course
      7. Correct
      10. Correct
14 Correct, but not Jane Monheit
      21 Correct
22 Correct, both song and version (Donald O'Connor)
      23 Correct
      25 Nope, not Belafonte
      29 Correct
30 Correct, and you probably knew which artist too
32 Withdrawn from the list: I got the lyrics wrong. I googled the song name and artist and it gave me the (Japanese) lyrics I supplied, but the song is really Indian and I have no idea what the lyrics are.
34 Correct, and it was the Kevin Max version

    4. Um... Did Casey and Haley sing I Feel the Earth Move? If not, they should have. I think they would have sounded cool on that.
And did Carole King sing #2? Because I'm pretty sure I Feel the Earth Move was one of hers.
I'm gonna guess Diana Krall for Somewhere Over the Rainbow if it's not Jane Monheit.
Wait, was Good Night My Someone the Kristin Chenoweth version? Because I was going to guess she was the singer of Silent Night. Heh.

    5. C & H: Yes they did and they did sound good.
CK: Yes she did and yes it was.
      DK: Nope, not her.
KC: Yes, it was her, so Silent Night wasn't.

I wouldn't be surprised if you knew the Karrin Allyson one (originally a James Taylor song), the James Taylor one, the Alberto Rivera one, the Christina Grimmie one, either of the Ray Charles duets, maybe Ed McCurdy (if you can remember who he is), maybe the Selena Gomez/Jonas Brothers ones.
